About This Book

When decorated Army captain Jake "Hawk" Hawkins returns to Liberty Falls with a Purple Heart and a past he can't outrun, the last thing he expects is to fall for the one woman who refuses to see him as a hero. Nurse practitioner Elena Reyes has spent years rebuilding her life in this tight-knit military town after her own devastating loss. She doesn't need another soldier with a savior complex — she needs someone real. But Jake isn't the cocky flyboy the town remembers. Haunted by the mission that took his best friend and left him scarred, he's fighting battles no medal can fix. When a crisis at the local veterans' clinic throws them together, the walls they've built start to crack. Small-town gossip, meddling families, and a Fourth of July festival that changes everything force Jake and Elena to confront the truth: sometimes the bravest thing a warrior can do is let someone in. A 75,000-word contemporary military romance with heart, heat, and a hard-won happily ever after.

Editorial Review

Xander Steele delivers a deeply emotional homecoming story that balances military grit with genuine tenderness. Jake's journey from wounded warrior to vulnerable lover is masterfully drawn, and Elena's fierce independence makes her the perfect match for a man who needs to be needed. The small-town setting of Liberty Falls comes alive with charm, humor, and community. At 318 pages, the pacing never falters — every chapter earns its place. Steele proves once again that he understands the complexities of love after loss, and the result is a romance that will leave you reaching for tissues and cheering at the final page.

Perfect for: Fans of military romance, small-town love stories, and readers who crave second-chance romances with emotional depth and authentic characters.

Absolutely beautiful

This book had me sobbing and smiling in equal measure. Jake is the kind of hero who earns your love page by page. Elena is strong, real, and refuses to be anyone's rescue project. Their chemistry is electric but it's the emotional depth that makes this special. Steele nails the military experience without romanticizing it.

Best military romance I have read this year

Liberty Falls feels like a real place and I want to move there. The Fourth of July scene? PERFECTION. Jake and Elena's slow burn is so well done. You feel every moment of tension and when they finally let their guards down, it's magic. Already waiting for Book 3!

Emotional and swoony

I devoured this in one sitting. The way Steele writes PTSD and healing is so respectful and authentic. Elena is a queen and Jake deserves her. The small-town cast of characters adds so much warmth. Five stars is not enough.

Great follow-up to Book 1

Really enjoyed seeing Liberty Falls again through new eyes. Jake and Elena have fantastic chemistry and the emotional stakes feel real. Lost half a star only because I wanted more of the clinic scenes, but the romance more than makes up for it.

Finally a military romance that gets it right

As a veteran myself, I'm picky about how military life is portrayed in romance. Steele gets it. Jake's struggles are real, his brotherhood bonds are authentic, and the healing journey doesn't feel rushed or fake. Plus the love story is genuinely moving. Highly recommend.

Sweet and steamy small-town romance

Loved the Liberty Falls setting and the community feel. Jake is a total book boyfriend. The pacing is great and the steam level is just right. Would have loved a bit more backstory on Elena's past but overall a wonderful read.
